Our childcare ratios will NOT change

Little Ladybirds Day Nursery is strongly opposed to Government plans to relax care ratios – and we can guarantee our ratios will remain the same as they are now.

We are making this guarantee now because we believe increasing the ratios could compromise the care and safety of children in nursery settings.

In the recent Government report ‘More Great Childcare’, there are plans to increase ratios for two-year-olds from four children per adult to six children and for one-year-olds and younger from three children per adult to four children. Ratios for three-year-olds and above will remain the same. The Government is justifying the ratio changes by saying it will lead to a reduction in childcare costs for parents.

But Lesley Thompson, Owner of High Bank/Little Ladybirds, said: “What price can you put on the safety and welfare of a child? The Government does not seem to have taken this into account.

“We believe these proposals are ill-conceived and could compromise the care being given to a child.

“We have some very experienced child care workers at our nursery and the children benefit from the time devoted to them by their key workers. Increasing ratios would only be detrimental to this.

“We can therefore guarantee to our current parents and for those considering High Bank/Little Ladybirds in the future, that even if these proposals are implemented, our staff to child ratios will remain exactly the same as they are now.”
