Children at Little Ladybirds  are learning that it’s fine to ask for more at lunchtime after being given responsibility for meal-times.

Youngsters in the pre-school room (ages 4-5) at Little Ladybirds Day Nursery now get to lay the table, serve their own meals and drinks and choose where they would like to sit.

It is part of the  nursery’s work to promote independence and social interaction among the children and ultimately prepare them for life and school and further.

Little Ladybirds Day Nursery Manager Jennifer Thompson said: “The children are really enjoying being in control of meal-times. They do everything an adult would do, from setting the table through to deciding how much food they want to put on their plate.

“They are encouraged to come and ask for more if they wish and we always ensure they get enough vegetables with their meal.

“It’s important that the children learn life skills at an early age and by giving them more responsibility at lunch-times, it is encouraging them to be more independent.

“There is a great atmosphere at lunch-time and it’s a good way of preparing them when they leave for school.”
